(S2) Three Dances For Piano by William Maxson is a set of dances with a fresh
sound. The pieces, not locked in the typical C or G positions, are more
technically demanding than they first appear. For “Piñata Dance,” students need
good coordination for the independent lines, position shifts, and displaced
rhythms. The etude-like “Turtle Dance” requires a sustained fifth finger under
moving five-finger patterns. The star of the collection is “Pony Dance,” whose
highly repetitive melody and ostinato, left-hand accompaniment are easy to
memorize. Once students have mastered the pattern of extending and contracting
the left hand, they will have a great time playing this dance. (Boston, $2.95)
